Facebook and SEO

I was asked 3 times last week by people if they could use their Facebook account to help with the SEO of their website. The simple answer is No.

Having a Facebook page for your business will not generate any customers via Google.

Facebook was originally created as a place for friends and family to keep in touch.

But because it is free over the years businesses have taken advantage of this and now most businesses and organisations have a Facebook page.

When people search Facebook they search for a person, an old school friend, maybe a lost relative or an old work colleague, NOT a business.

When someone searches for your kind of business or product they search Google. Facebook business pages do not appear in the Google results.

The only customers that will find your business via Facebook are customers that already know you exist. You will not gain any new customers via Facebook.

The main reason that businesses have a Facebook page is for their existing customers.

For businesses the job of maintaining their Facebook page is a very time consuming process with very little to show for it in return.

If businesses had to pay for their Facebook account very few would bother.

So, as it's free, have a business Facebook page, but do not expect to generate any new customers from it, or for it to help your own websites position in the Google results.
