The Alt Tag and SEO
I had an enquiry the other day and the person asked if I would be using the Alt Tag as part of the SEO of their website ?
This is a typical example (which I get all the time) of someone reading something about SEO and not knowing what it actually is or what it means.
They did not have a clue what the Alt Tag was but they still questioned me about it.
I know for a fact that there are SEO Consultants that use the Alt Tag as part of the SEO process and even they do not know what it is for !
So, just to clarify, in case you may be interested..
The Alt Tag displays text in the area that an image should be if that image does not appear on the web page.
The Alt Tag was used years ago before Broadband when everybody had a dial up Internet connection.
By switching the images off in your browser so that they did not display it speeded up the download of the web page.
In the White space where the image should have been the Alt Tag displays text which is supposed to describe what the image is,
Picture of James Bond - for instance.
Because the Alt Tag is part of the web page code Google will read it which is why SEOs sometimes place a keyword in the tag.
Having a keyword in the Alt Tag just gives Google another place to find a searched keyword on the website page.
